While the field of medicine has gained the sophistication and expertise to solve the mystery behind the Corona virus global threat and created a vaccine to cure it, there are still unmet needs when it comes to complex injuries of the extremities. These injuries, including the terrible triad of the elbow, trimalleolar ankle fractures, complex shoulder girdle injuries, and complex scapholunate injuries, pose challenges to surgeons due in large part to the variations in the way they present from patient to patient.

Acumed, a medical device company with over 30 years of experience, focuses on these complex injuries and provides a comprehensive line of medical devices to treat them. The company, which started with an R&D focus, now provides products for the hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, tendon and ligament repair, orthobiologics, trauma, craniomaxillofacial, and rib and sternum continues to grow as an innovation and technology leader.

Acumed creates orthopedic implants and instruments to treat traumatic injuries and degenerative conditions for optimal patient outcomes and restoration of function. In the case of fracture fixation, Acumed claims to be the industry-first for numerous anatomically contoured plating systems. Sharon Wolfington, President and CEO of Acumed, describes the benefit of these plating systems: “When a surgeon reduces a fracture, they are setting the bone pieces in close proximity so that healing can occur. Our pre-contoured plates match the average human anatomy, which is designed to reduce surgical time, improve accuracy, and provide surgeons with a reduction guide.”

Traumatic and complex injuries often damage tendons and ligaments supporting fractured bones. The company has a full solution approach, with fracture fixation and reconstruction solutions that repair the injured bone and products that reattached or repair associated to damaged tendons and ligaments.

Acumed offers an anatomic radial head solution, which is used when an elbow injury is so complex that the patient’s native radial head must be replaced, ideally with a device that mimics the patient’s natural anatomy. Wolfington notes, “We recently launched an upgraded anatomic radial head and have been able to convert 75 percent of our customers, suggesting that surgeons value the anatomic improvements of our new system, which are designed to provide surgeons with numerous options to meet in situ challenges for optimal patient outcomes.” She adds, “We have over 900 head and stem combinations in our ARH2 solution that highly skilled surgeons can use to customize our implants for a specific patient.”

A highlight of Acumed’s range of solutions, the Acutrak screw is the first and still the only one of its kind.

The continuously variable thread pitch design of the Acutrak screws allows for gradual, consistent compression along the entire length of the screw. This means the fracture can lie almost anywhere along the length of the screw. This unique feature directly addresses surgical challenges of location sensitivity, allowing greater flexibility in relation to the fracture site.

Acumed has included orthobiologics in its product portfolio to complement its comprehensive solutions for complex injuries. In periarticular injuries, which are close to the joint surface, a depression occurs at the joint level, and the surgeon has to restore the joint surface to its natural anatomy to avoid the potential for arthritis. Surgeons elevate the bone to restore the joint surface, which can leave a bony void, so they need a biologic to fill that void. Acumed’s portfolio of biologics provides structure, which is designed to induce osteoblastic activity, and act as a conductive material for angiogenesis.

In addition to developing new products and enhancing existing solutions, Acumed will expand its portfolio through strategic mergers and acquisitions. Wolfington notes, “We recently merged with OsteoMed, which enhances our vision of serving highly skilled, fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeons. Last year we added Acute Innovations to our portfolio, which focuses on chest wall fixation and reconstruction.”

Acumed bases its business philosophy on four primary principles – quality, innovation, education, and evidence. Wolfington said, “Considering our implants may remain in a patient’s body for a lifetime, quality is imperative. Our quality-first culture enables Acumed to be an entity in good standing with the notified bodies around the world.” Acumed has acquired FDA and CE mark approval in the medical device single audit program.

Acumed provides numerous educational opportunities for surgeons, including their ELiTE™ resident and fellow curriculum designed for residents interested in pursuing an upper limb specialty and fellows currently enrolled in an upper limb fellowship.

Acumed is committed to innovation and the advancement of medicine through the support of research endeavors in orthopedics and other related medical specialties. Acumed collaborates on nonclinical and clinical research projects that fulfill a genuine research purpose to the medical industry. Acumed initiatives are designed appropriately for scientific merit and comply with the AdvaMed Code of Ethics on interactions with health care professionals. Acumed serves highly skilled specialized surgeons that demand comprehensive, high-quality medical devices for patients with simple to complex injuries for optimal restoration of function.
